Reading to your children is one of the best things a parent can do with their child – dealing with nightmares is among the worst you can do. To deal with these nightmares, parents do just about anything, and will put up with just about anything – including helping their children arm themselves against the would-be monsters.
Of course, this movie isn’t that straightforward. There are shades of coloring in that aren’t normally expected from an independent film, and definitely explain part of why it’s generally rated as one of the most overloooked horror films.
It manages to be creepy by preying on the feelings of love between mother and child – expressions of loss, and longing. And an ending you just don’t really see coming. Because of all this, I give The Babadook a cheery four bloody kitties.
